When the cartridge is removed, a micro switch automatically turns the unit off. Should the device ever remain on for over twenty seconds, two thermal automatic resets built into the printed circuit boards will automatically cause the unit to shut down, cool and reset in two seconds.

Swarf



Swarf is the result of vaporization of metal and reduces the metal to its original oxides.

Recent microbiology tests were conducted on the remains or swarf contained in the cartridge.

The tests included six bacteria, two fungi and one virus. The results demonstrated clearly and conclusively that no cultures were living in the oxidized material or in the container.

The conclusion is that the swarf can be discarded in regular waste or recycled at the option of the facility. The key is that it is not biohazardous waste in any degree.

Metallurgists have studied the oxides and have determined that they are recyclable. They can be used in paint manufacture for example, or the manufacture of tape and disks or even refined into stainless steel products again.

The Medical Disposal Device, as it vaporizes, produces oxidized particles of magnesium. It is considered cold swarf. You can touch it and you don’t get any sensation. The sparks will not ignite any gas or liquid. We are aware that all swarf is not cold. The ignition point depends on the molecular consistency of the metal and the volume or thickness. The sparks emitted during the oxidization of stainless steel in the Medical Disposal Device are safe.





Profitability



The destruction of hypodermic needles is mandated by both State and Federal Law and the destruction is supervised. Accordingly, patients accounts can be charged for this service. Housing



The plastic housing is Lexon Hospital grade 161 as is the cartridge with the exception of its lid which is a flexible polypropelene. The cartridge has an aluminum heat spreader to avoid any internal plastic melt.

The Medical Disposal Device is U.L. listed as a patient care and FDA approved.


OSHA



OSHA requires engineering devices to aid the control of needle exposures. The Medical Disposal Device oxidizes stainless steel hypodermic needles.

OSHA has expanded its standards to provide a mechanism for enforcement of universal precautions in all occupational settings where exposure to pathogens occur. This includes the offices of physicians and dentists.

Each employer shall establish a written Exposure Control Plan (ECP) designed to eliminate or minimize employee(s) exposure. This plan shall be made readily accessible to employees and updated at least annually or whenever necessary.

Engineering controls shall be in place which remove or isolate bloodborne pathogens from the workplace (disposal, etc...)

Employers shall provide hand washing facilities and appropriate antiseptic hand cleanser. Employees shall ensure that following patient contact, removal of protective equipment and appropriate hand washing procedures are maintained.

Employers shall ensure the appropriate handling and disposal of sharps.

The OSHA standards establish requirements for HIV and HBV research laboratories and production facilities.
